Mighty Murray Paddle
This year we thought we would end the Winter LD season in style with an All-Club Social Activity – The Mighty Murray Paddle – 560km total distance !!
West Lakes Paddle Sports
Mighty Murray Paddle
Wednesday 6th October – Sunday 10th October
This is an opportunity for the club to have a social activity as well as give us the opportunity to see the Murray from the border to Wellington, which is at the start of Lake Alexandrina a total of 560km.
We will paddle in two boat teams (doubles or singles) over the distances set out below. For some legs, a safety craft will be used. Depending on team numbers paddlers would expect to do 2 sessions per day.
Camping can be in caravan parks or free camping. Single-day participation is also welcomed.
Paddlers do not have to enroll for the whole activity but can do days or a day, whatever you are comfortable with. Car-pooling is also an option so that independent younger paddlers can be accommodated.
By running in the school holidays Younger paddlers can be the mainstay of the activity with adults helping more on the weekend when we are closer to Adelaide.
Example of a day
First day Wednesday 6th October will start 12pm at Border Cliffs and finish at Lock 5 –
12pm Border Cliffs to Lock 6 16km 90 mins
2pm lock 6 to Headings Cliff 24km 120 mins
4pm Headings to Whirlpool bend 24km 120mins
6pm Whirlpool to Lock 5 10km 60 mins
Finish 7pm and stay at Renmark Caravan Park overnight.
Thursday would then start 6am at Lock 5 and continue along with the Murray with sections being broken up between 10km to 24 km sections. Faster/ more experienced paddlers are being encouraged to do the longer sections.
The plan is to finish at Wellington lunchtime on Sunday.
Once we know how many paddlers are wanting to join us in this adventure we will be able to develop a more detailed plan and schedule.
RSVP – if you want to be part of this adventure let us know via email westlakes@paddle.org.au
Many thanks,
Jim Murphy and WLPS committee.
